POETS AND BOOKS OF POETRY THAT WE LIKE

http://www.poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/205

LOVE Sharon Olds' work. Intensely personal, vivid, visceral, sexual, and beautiful. In real life she is very mild mannered and soft spoken (wears her hair pulled up with bobby pins, no makeup on, glasses and soft soled shoes) but the personal she creates in her work is bold, brave, strong, sexual, and beautiful. A real lesson for me in how the "self" we create in our work IS constructed, a fiction or stand-in for ourselves rather than the "real" us. That realization I found liberating.

I love Mark Doty's poetry. He has also written a beautiful memoir, "Heaven's Coast," about losing his long-time partner to AIDS. It is interesting to read that memoir alongside his poems and see where life and art intersect.
